Martha Lourey-Bird, MSpSc, BSpSc(ExSc), DipRT A family fitness expert that makes exercise fun!
"I love what I do and am happiest helping others get the most from life, no matter what their circumstances are", Martha says.
With her Masters degree, Martha is an exercise scientist, university lecturer, scientific adviser, fitness editor, author and proud mum to her very own fit kids.
Martha has been a lecturer in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, Faculty of Medicine at the University of New South Wales for over 15years. She has taught nearly 20,000 University students and was awarded the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2010. Her depth of knowledge, extensive experience and passion for health and fitness has made Martha one of Australia’s leading exercise scientists.
As a 6-foot tall successful athlete, Martha has been involved in the fitness industry for two decades as a leading instructor trainer, a recipient of the state’s Fitness Leader of the Year award, presenter at countless conferences and director of her own personal training company - training celebrities, politicians, musicians, fashion designers, mums and dads. Today, with a special interest in ‘family health’, she leads by example and continues to passionately practise what she preaches, even with two young children in tow!
Martha’s career has taken her all around the world, including a three-year contract in the UK as Training Director of Shape Fitness Education. She has presented exercise advice in over 12 different countries but now, residing on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, she is a regular expert on radio, television and in the print media.
Martha is also Ambassador for Ryka women's only athletic footwear, the exercise expert for FitFlop footwear and the fitness editor of Weight Watchers magazine (print run 120,000+/month), where she provides motivational advice and effective exercise ideas; which she has regularly shared with television viewers for over 5 years.
Martha passionately believes that exercise is for everybody and her positive, personal and practical approach is captured in her book Exercise and the F word... FUN! (rrp $24.95). Exercise is an integral part of her own everyday life, even while balancing the demands of her busy work schedule and her family life as a wife and mother.
"My love of health and fitness spills over into my personal life and I enjoy being a positive role model and active mum to my 9-year old son and 5-year old daughter," says Martha. "I love helping people make positive changes to their lifestyle. Presenting exercise and health advice in a way that's relevant to a wide audience of different fitness levels is my passion. It would solve a lot of health problems if we all viewed exercise as a reward and not as a form of punishment!"
